Oatmeal still stands to be one of my favorite breakfast go-tos. It is incredibly nostalgic for me and the smell alone brings me back to my childhood. Endless days where I would hold the warm bowl to heat my hands when the weather was too cold to bear. Oatmeal is also one of the simplest meals to make and as a kid I loved that I could make it all on my own. (Guess that should have been a foreshadowing for me that independently cooking would become my thing!)
I love that you can transform oatmeal a million different ways and can satisfy your sweet or savory desires. Go classic and throw just a little (dairy free) milk and a sprinkle of brown sugar. Or go crazy and throw some avocado and vegan sausage in there and tell me it’s not the best thing ever!
Todays oatmeal venture was a bit more classic and simple. I felt like using the gorgeous fresh berries in my fridge with just a touch of brown sugar. I personally am not a huge sweets eater and typically decline all things sugary…I know I am weird. However, when it comes to oatmeal I love a little brown sugar. I think it adds just the perfect bit of sweetness with the richness of its flavor. Oatmeal is just meant to be paired with brown sugar and honestly I do not think it tastes nearly as good with white sugar. I may not be a sweets expert but just trust me on this, I know my oatmeal.
For convenience and time-saving, I am all for using instant oatmeal. If you have time to use the slow cooking oats then totally go for it. But, most of us live our lives on the go or if you are like me no matter how early you wake up you are always in a rush. So, I choose to accept that about myself and just be one with the instant.
My personal brand of choice at the moment is “Nature’s Path” and more specifically their Organic Flax Plus Instant Oatmeal. It is absolutely delicious and I always welcome the opportunity to have the benefits from flax seeds in my diet.
- 1 package of instant Flax Plus oatmeal
- about 1/3-1/2 cup of dairy free milk or water (I tend to do a little bit of both but that’s just me)
- 2 fresh strawberries, washed and roughly chopped
- a handful of fresh blueberries
- a tiny sprinkle of brown sugar (if you use white sugar just don’t tell me I don’t want to be hurt like that)
Place your package of instant oats into a bowl and add in your milk or water. Stir until completely mixed then throw your bowl into the microwave for about 90 seconds. Then carefully remove it from the microwave and stir. Top it with your fresh berries and a sprinkle of brown sugar. Then you can stir and enjoy!
**Pro tip: if it’s cold outside use your bowl as a heating device and turn your breakfast into the real MVP of the day!
